Embed the MN740 in a modded xbox case

Hello all,

I have an MCXB case for one Xbox that can fit up to six hard drives. Since I can get a 2TB in there just fine with everything I want on it I have a lot of extra space. I'd like to be able to install the MN740 wifi adapter in the case so the unit can be self-contained.

Does anyone know how to get power for such a setup internally for the wifi adapter?

Thanks in advance,

Phineas

The wifi adapter uses (DC) 6V, 1.0A correct?

I assume it can run off 5v. Depending on the xbox version, you could the 5v from LPC or any xbox versions 5v from the AV port.

The only concern is the amps required.

Hi Rocky5,

I found on ebay a power supply board that provides 6volts and 1amp. I'm going to split a line off where the current power cord attaches to the existing power supply and power it that way.

Make sense?

You could use the 5v from the PSU, 5volts should be enough for the WIFI board to function. Would save you having to attach other boards to the PSU.

But I guess if you use the 6v 1amp then it matches the power supply, so its entirely up to you. (space maybe an issue)

Taking your advice I was able to mount the unit into the case as is, leveraging the +5 volt from the power supply. I found a flat thin ethernet cable that I can out the case and into the ethernet port so if I want to disable I just unplug it. I placed it in the far left back end of the case. Without having to extend the antenna I'm getting a good enough connection for streaming frommy Plex Server.

Here's the picture with the case off and on... works like a champ.

I also have an LCD screen, Xenium Modchip, Xir Remote and a 2TB SATA drive with SATA2IDE converter. Latest XBMC build now. CoinOps and Vision coming!

Thanks for the assist Rocky5.

Some things I want to do to 'complete' the project are:

1) The knob on the right used to be for selecting which hard drive had power. It broke a while ago so I'm going to turn it into a knob that turns the wifi on or off.
2) Solder the ethernet adapter to the motherboard underside so I can plug in an outside ethernet with disconnecting the internal wifi one
3) Embed a component to HDMI video coverter and have an HDMI port on the back to be compatible with the latest TVs. I bought a 70" for over the mantle and it has NO component in. :(

I have been an XBMC user from almost day one and I have watched the project evolve into what it is now, and my system at home revolves around Plex. CoinOps and Vision I only discovered earlier in the year and this reignited my interest in the original Xbox.

Oh, I also recently got this for my home theater: http://www.xgaming.com/store/arcade-joy ... sb-cables/. It just makes the experience complete!

Ok, I couldn't wait. Swapped out the knob with a nice blue rimmed switch that can turn the wifi power on and off.

It matches the color of the LEDs on the power switch on the far left.

Came out sweet!

I have not seen this version of the MCBX case before. I thought mine was the only version that came with a LCD built in. Is that a stock LCD case or did you add the LCD to it? I can see that you have a crystal fontz LCD and I know that must be the LCD that you got with the SPI2PAR adapter. But I like that way it looks with the DVD in the middle. Mine is all they way to the left side. I cant figure out of yours is newer or older then mine either now. Considering they were in business for less then a year.

Also what is that slim metal piece on the left side of the LCD? I also do not see a on and eject button like all the other MCBX cases have. Also above the controller ports what is the middle thing between the USB port and the IR sensor hole? I cant figure that out either.

Hi Dave,

The slim metal piece on the left is the power/dvd button. The top is the on/off; bottom is the dvd tray.

The thing in the middle is a recessed switch to enable the USB port in lieu of a controller port.

I think my case was the last version they came out with because I remember seeing the one you have and not really giving it a second look. The Xbox I had built had the custom X3 face plate in an original xbox case with an LCD display. I eventually moved those guts into this case; then had the X3 chip fail so I didnt use it much until I found the LCD modkit on IsoZone from FloydDaBarber. Unfortunately he no longer has these kits available.

I have one of those kits also with the SPI2PAR adapter. I know where to order the parts from to still complete a setup like that. You can also wire that LCD up to a smartxx mod chip. I think the xenium is a good chip but I think the smartxx is the best. The X3 is alright also but I do not like the fact that the OS is embedded into the bios and that you have to have a DVD drive and Hard drive hooked up to access the chips OS. THe smartxx and the xenium allow you to boot directly to the chips OS and it is not embedded into the bios.

If you decide to ever sell that case let me know! I would love to have it in my collection. I also have a XBcase with the LCD and for my 360 I have a lian li XB-01 case. I just love the metal cases. What says modded more then a metal after market case.

Did you have to make the hole for that switch any bigger then the knob was? I would want to change it back to a knob and use it with the 3 hard drives.

I also redid my MCBX case. I took the bios select switch off and added a PRO switch inside the case. I also added USB ports and slim lined the console one more time. The cool thing I did was swap the motherboard also. I put in a version 1.2 that has the 128 RAM upgrade done back in 2004 from the friendtech people. So this is a 10 year old 128 upgrade and that is stable!

You should also swap the DVD drive for a 8164 hitachi. It is 8 times faster then the stock drive is. It also will read any type of media.

I had to bore the hole out to fit the new switch.

I have one of the old switcher kits that actually reboots the xbox with a new drive selected. you might be able to put that in.

What would you do with 6TBs of storage?

I'm going to wire a dvd dongle in this weekend, and add an external wifi antenna to the MN740.

And the last thing would be the HDMI to component converter so it's got a 'native' HDMI out.

I sent you a PM about the selector that you have. That is something that I need.

I added an external high-gain antenna because the signal was too low while the antenna it came with us inside the case.

Awesome reception now and it looks 'stock'! :-)

Don't be jealous yet...

To do's:

Install XERC 2 & MS DVD Dongle
Install Component to HDMI converter internal to case
Replace clone Xenium with Xenium (clone requires an MS Controller plugged in to boot)
Profit!

Ok so I'm running the wireless adapter off the existing power supply. Can I add another device without issues?

I picked up a power supply board that matched the old transformer of the wireless adapter I could simply piggyback off of the AC in points and then use the power supply for the 5 volts for the adapter.
