[SOLVED] "xbox live is updating your system..."

I have been given an (unopened) v1.6 which when switched on boots into the MS dash and pops up the following pop-up message "xbox live is updating your system...", followed by " xbox live is not responding..." and loops through these two messages with press of OK (green A).

Doesn't seem to want to boot a retail game disc. ...I was hoping to softmod with Splinter Cell.

Google's not particularly helpful and xbox-scene is down. Anyone got any ideas?

Looks like a softmod gone bad.

Try swapping the DVD drive with one you know works, then try booting a retail game. If that works, use Halo 2 (or later) to restore the stock dash, then you can softmod it.

If not then you're into hotswapping, or fitting a chip.

Great advice Aitch, thanks.

Box opened, fixing underway, I'll let you know how I get on.

**EDIT**
And so, using an X3 I pulled from a v1.4 I recovered the box - fully working with an upgraded hard disc :-)

Gory details of the logisitcs here...

dan.h's problem is quite different from yours. You had a non-booting dash, while he has a misflashed TSOP.

Correct.
Solution similar - fit modchip (in my case, one of a few options, in dan.h's one of very few).
