I want to stream HD shows and movies (mostly mp4, MKV) from my PC to my XBOX's.
Anyone know of a good, free alternative to PlayOn? I really only need on the fly transcoding/streaming from my PC (core 2 quad, windows x64).

I am well aware of how to set up SMB shares. The trouble is, that the XBOX does not have enough muscle to handle HD streams.
I am wondering if there is a media server application to run on my PC that can transcode on the fly to my XBOX without having to convert the fipe from HD to SD.
PlayOn has this feature, but it is not free, and more that what I need.

Did you click the 3rd link? Doesn't look like SMB to me.

Thank you! I was about to go over the forum and found this on the first page. Thank you. I have a computer that I really want to set up and put through it's paces.
As a matter of casual conversation, Does anyone have any insight about if these programs work from the GPU? I.E. (For example) do any of the transcoding programs use Hardware acceleration such as CUDA or ATI's (correct me if I am wrong) AVIVO tech in these products?
I am going to do some snooping around, and ask Google of course, but I thought it would be cool to get the community's thoughts on what is the preferred program to use with XBMC version for the xbox.
Part of the reason why I do this is so I can learn how to set up a community wireless network so I can stream my content of DVD's etc. to the people in the apartment complex next to use. I thought it would be fun to do and a great way to learn and give back- But that is a whole different topic.
Thank you!
Mickey

A few years ago I've seen something like that in a closed circuit in a little hotel in Paris using iMacs - it was switching channels with the little Apple Remote, attaching magnetically to the unit, it was neat I must say.
It seemed like running VLC from what I could see poking around, maybe using VLM.
