First time Xbox Softmod for xbmc - Newbie

Hi, I'm new here and had to join to post as this seems like the best place to get up to date help with xbmc for xbox1. I've had an xbox collecting dust for years, when I recently seen something posted about xbmc on xbox somewhere that got me interested in digging out mine. I've heard of modding the console but I have never looked into until earlier this week. I have now decided to set the xbox up in my gf house as she still has a crt tv. I want to do the usual like get the emulators and xbmc running.

I want to softmod as it seems like the easiest option at the moment. I have ordered the following 2nd hand items and they should arrive within the week hopefully.

  • Splinter Cell

  • Action Replay Max - (cheats disk with 8mb memory card. and usb to xbox cable)
  • I'm not sure if I need an official memory card aswell? ( I doubt it, as there seems to be a third party memory card with the Action replay)
  • Ethernet cable (lying around somewhere or grab one from somewhere)
I'm missing
  • The files that go on the memory card that you transfer to the xbox
A lot of the guides that I have checked out are MANY years old and I believe I need 2 game saves or some sort of exploits. I would appreciate if somebody could provide me with the downloads or links to where I can get the files that are required to do the softmod.

Do I need anything else for the softmod? (I dont think I do, for the above)

I am thinking of maybe adding a bigger harddrive but I dont have one at the moment, so I'm hoping that I can softmod it now and maybe swap the hard drive for a bigger one at a later date? will this cause problems?

btw I tried to have a look but I didnt see a complete newbie guide on the forums so if there is one somewhere on here I wouldnt mind a link to it. The for dummies version will do lol

Thanks in advance for any help

Splinter Cell has 2 saves.

Use xplorer360 instead of Action Reply so that you avoid messing with the drivers.

You just need the file in heimdall signature burnt to a DVD and then boot the Xbox with the disk inside and select which softmod you want and follow the instructions, unless your Xbox is version 1.6 and then its a different story.

Cheers
Pete

Sorrry to confuse the OP, but Pete's info here is not helpful.
First you must get your exploit files onto your XB0X - this is why you need the memory card. The files are contained on Heimdall's HeXEn disc, but you can't run that disc on your XB0X until you have applied the exploit. ...and the link isn't in Heimdall's sig on this new forum.
The files can be found on the web, for example try searching for "XBOX SOFTMOD KRAYZIE NDURE" on sites like kat dot ph. Goood luck.

However, this is more helpful. Specifically, Heimdall's post in that thread: http://www.xbmc4xbox.org.uk/forum/viewt ... ?t=28#p149

Aidtracker.com is the official Host of those exploits now, download the SID 5.0 ( the 9 mb version)

Nothing wrong with that, but worth explaining to the OP that there are several exploits, Krayzie Ndure is one, SID is another.

Best bet is to follow my video guide, it shows how to do a softmod using HeXEn (definately the safest and best softmod in my opinion). I still need to post it up on this forum but you can check it out at xbmchub.com - there are 2 parts...

Part 1
Part 2

You may need to sign up to view those links, well worth doing - they won't send you any spam and are a very helpful bunch.

You can get the gamesave exploits that work with HeXEn here

Thanks for all the help and tips guys, I think I'm going to try and follow whufclee guide, it looks good. Thanks for the link that should come in mighty handy. I have a PAL xbox so do I just have to get both folders from "SC PAL" folder onto my xbox hard drive? hopefully I can use the action replay? ( I saw idotsfan mention that I might have to mess around with drivers?)

anyway I'm just waiting for the items to arrive and then I will crack on..... I like the look of coinops 4 but read that you need another hard drive as its a install too big for the normal harddrive. Anyway, I'll start off small and get the basics done first. I think that makes more sense.

Thanks again for all the help and spicemuseum for pointing out a few things in a easier way for a noob lol

Boys, if this is all the relevant info for a first time soft modder, how about condensing it into one post with links that a 1st time person can read in one hit and understand easily with Whuf's videos included and sticky the bloody thing so it won't get buried. This procedure get asked so many times and as people say, "it is confusing and full of old information on the net". It would make a fine tutorial called something like- "The Lastest, Easiest Way To Softmod Your Xbox". As you guys know this is NOT my way of modding or else I would do it myself as I believe it is long overdue. I wish we that hardmod could write one tutorial to cover all types of hardmodding but with so many ways, chip types etc, that is damm near impossible. Anyway, best of luck boys and I hope I didn't offend anybody by writing this, just trying to make it as easy as possible for people that are already confused after using the net. ;)

Yep you'll love Coinops4 but will definately need to upgrade your HDD - get the softmod done and then you can worry about upgrading the HDD at a later date. If you want to take a look on ebay in the meantime for a larger HDD it might be a good idea. I would suggest a minimum 250GB PATA (the old IDE style ones not SATA) and it needs to be "lockable". I've only ever come across one HDD that wasn't lockable but it's always best to check on the compatibility list before purchasing an HDD. FYI Coinops4 will just abouts fit on an 80gb hdd but Coinops5 is coming out and it's MASSIVE!

By the way, before someone else comes on here saying that you can use SATA drives - yes you can but you need an adaptor and they aren't as reliable. That said you can have up to 2TB with SATA and only up to 500GB with PATA (there's a few 750gb ones out there somewhere but they are very hard to find and will be very expensive).

@xman: Good plan mate, I've been meaning to do one for a while now but just keep running out of time. If anyone wants to make one before I get around to it feel free to link my videos. They are on youtube in my channel so you can embed them on this forum.

Thanks, I did a search to find out about Coinops 5 but I couldnt see the release date for the xbox (Is it released for PC & Xbox or just Xbox?). Have you heard when the release date will be, I saw something that mentioned September but I think they was talking about something else.

I'll keep an eye out for a IDE hard drive, although the prices are quite high for the bigger sized ones : ( . BTW I've got a Samsung Spinpoint F3 1 TB sata drive, that I'm yet to put in my pc. I checked the model number on that compatibility list you provided and see that it was listed once and the person said that they locked it, it says that they locked it with "All in One installer 4.5" if I use my SATA drive I know that I'll need an adaptor, will any old IDE to SATA adapter from ebay work? as searching around I seen people saying that they bought the adapter from "dealextreme" and I can only imagine that there must be some sort of reason that people were buying it from there instead of a ebay?

Oh yeah are there allot of cons in regards to using a Sata drive instead of an IDE drive? I see that you said they not as reliable does that mean they are more likely to fail or that they are slower, etc?

Coinops is for Xbox only and although I'm.not sure when it will be released I'd say it's probably not too far off - BP bangs out new releases very frequently.

You will need a working ide-sata adaptor, not many work on Xbox. I might be able to send you one of mine if you need one as I bought a few recently. Generally a large sata HDD will have slow boot times (think it's about 30 seconds). Also there has been evidence that using an adaptor will decrease the lifespan of your HDD. However saying that, the few that I've done over the years haven't failed. Oh and also the adaptors can come loose when you move the Xbox meaning you have to open up the box again to push it back in.

AFAIK, SID is a modified Ndure

I received the Splinter Cell game, I'm just waiting for the Action Replay to arrive still. It's taking abit long to arrive I might have to email the seller to find out when I should get it. I've also ordered a 400gb IDE hard drive from a forum that I will also hopefully get soon. I aint looked on here proper the last few days as I've been stressed out trying to sort out a buyer or their bank reversing payment for an item I sold to them and sent recorded delivery, but the situation is getting tricky.

To be honest all you need is a memory card, if you send it to me I'd be happy to copy the relevant gamesave file to it for you. I'm in UK - if you need someone to do this for you let us know where you are and I'm sure someone on here is in the same country and would do it for you for the price of a beer ;)

I made a video that goes through all of the steps for a softmod.

Hope it helps.

@fbpearce: Thanks for posting that up again, I lost the link on the old forum. I'll get that posted up on xbmchub for you. You might want to consider adding that video to the tutorial section on here - we don't have one showing how to upgrade a HDD yet. Haven't had time to watch it all yet but it looks a great tutorial from what I've seen, that will give me something to watch tomorrow :)

Thanks for that, i might have to take you up on that offer. Earlier I emailed the seller to ask when I should receive the Action Replay and the guy said that he sent it in the post on the 20th July by 1st class post. He then gave me a refund not long after. I got it for quite cheap so I wonder if he changed his mind in selling it?

I don't have a memory card, but I ordered one of those as well and the delivery date I think was for around today, so hopefully it arrives tomorrow. Yeah it would appreciated if you could put the games saves on there for me when I get it. I'm in the UK also, North London.

Oh yeah, I received my IDE hard drive. I didnt think I would get that before all the other bits and bobs lol
