Nextelhalo, what does "rebuilding the hard drive" mean? I'm a software engineer, and that sounds like formatting and reinstalling your OS

I thought I just had to modify the BIOS via TSOP to boot xbmc instead of the MS dash.
If you have XBMC in the file system, you could just reflash the TSOP with the BIOS edited to look for the location of the XBMC default.xbe, in which case you wouldn't need to rebuild the hard drive. (BTW, you're right about what rebuilding implies, but it's not particularly onerous on an X80X.)

And certainly don't be worried about re-flashing a Winbond, I've done a few. With HeXEn.
I actually have a HeXEn disc, but I didn't have the guts to try a Winbond flash

Follow the steps
very carefully, it works a treat.

Exactly, it will format it and setup your files and folders. It does give you a few options of where you would like XBMC installed.

Thanks for the replies spicemuseum and Nextelhalo
Yeah, I'm thinking of reflashing the TSOP.
That way I can edit the boot path and edit the boot logo colors
Since I copied everything from a softmodded Xbox over to this TSOP'd one, which dash is the softmodded Xbox booting by default? I figure I can edit the BIOS to boot from that one.
I'll take a look at the files on the softmodded Xbox in a few days. I used SID 5.12 and installed XBMC.

Just a little advice as I flashed my tsop last night for the 1st time.
I tried to use the "all you need v2" that asbo posted earlier but it kept failing the flash process with "unknown flash type", HOWEVER it would successfully flash using HeXEn. :/
After serval hours and several different M8plus bios it turned out to be the evox.ini in the evox folder within "all you need v2".
To fix all you have to do is open HeXEn iso/disc and scroll down and find evox.ini.
If you compare both of these you will see under bios on HeXEn there a lot more entries, simply copy the evox.ini from HeXEn and replace the one in the evox folder that came with "all you need v2".
Now you should be able to successfully flash your bios
All the best
Paul

ah yes sorry about that, I think the evox.ini I provided is simply the one it comes with, should have mentioned that.
Somewhere there is a big ol' list of Rom hashes etc. but I've never saved a copy of it, not sure where it comes from
Also I'm 99% sure evox can't flash WINBOND TSOP's no mater what config file you have.

I use HeXEn to re-flash Winbond. It fires up a tool (whose name I forget) within Gentoox to do the writing.
--EDIT--
I just googled and turned up this thread (into which I also contributed)...

I use HeXEn to re-flash Winbond.
I did too on the WINBOND xbox I have, the only annoyance is that it flashes it with a BIOS from the HeXEn disc which of course you can't edit. I remember spending a while messing around trying to figure out how to do it, including downloading a copy of the Gentoox loader which I could never get to work. I think I ended up digging around in the HeXEn .iso, editing the BIOS and then copying the relevant files to xbox and running them from there.
I'm also pretty sure that the Gentoox doesn't display anything with component cables which is extra annoying!

Have a read of the thread I linked to. I got it to flash a BIOS I put on the hard drive. It was, in fact, surprisingly straightforward.

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies
It has been a while, but sometime in the near future I think I'll be back at my friend's house, so I can finish working on his Xbox
I have a HeXEn disc burned already, and it sounds like I need to redo the Winbond flash.
I've done BIOS flashes on my PSP (I have no idea if this is similar) but how does it work on the Xbox? Do I have to provide a BIOS file?
Ideally, I want the BIOS to have the original Xbox boot logo colors and boot from the same location as a softmodded (non-TSOP) Xbox with XBMC installed.
It has been a while since I've looked at the contents of my softmodded Xbox, so I'm not sure what the BIOS is booting off of. I'm pretty sure it's C:\
<some filename>.xbe.
I'd like to wrap my brain around all this before I'm back at my friend's house.
Thanks!

So a quick update here everyone
I am finally back at my friend's house and I got the TSOP'd Xbox working!
I used the HeXEn disc to redo the Winbond TSOP flash, then I deleted everything on the Xbox, installed the MS dash using AID, then installed XBMC to the C drive using AID; now it boots directly to XBMC! (what I wanted).
I probably could've edited the BIOS to bypass some of this work, but I'm happy with how it all turned out
You're right, TSOP is very easy to work with. If I ever deal with one again I think I'll edit the BIOS.
Thanks for all the help everyone! I updated the Xbox to the latest XBMC and my friend and I have been enjoying it

Why did you re install the MS dash ? its pretty much redundant now .

Yeah, I thought about that later
I guess I did it because after I deleted everything off the Xbox it was booting up with a dash error, and installing the MS dash fixed it.
Maybe I did it just in case XBMC fails somehow the MS dash will still be there to boot from?
Idk, but it's working now, so I'm happy
