Tips on Running XBMC in 1080i

Post by SquirlKiller »

zekepliskin originally posted in the previous xbmc4xbox forum a list of tips on how to run xbmc4xbox without crashing at 1080i and thought I'd repost somethings that i remember.

Settings>System
-Disable Auto temprature control/set it to a high temp so the fans never kick in at high speeds ("2% minimum, 68 degrees C/154 degrees F as max temp")
-Set [video?] cache to 256kb

Settings>Video
-Set video resolution to "1080i 16:9"
-Set flicker filter "off"
-Disable "soften" setting
-Set "Mplayer" as default player
-Disable DVDPlayer full codec support (and possible fast mode)

Settings>Skin Settings
-Disable animations

Settings.Appearance
-Set flicker filter to "off"
-Disable "soften" setting
-Set resolution to "1080i 16:9"

Settings>Network
-Disable all settings (FTP, UPnP, Control)

UPnP Sharing is probably fine but I remember he said to disable
If you need FTP just re-enable when you need it and disable when you don't

-go back to the main menu very often in order to not have a memory build up.
-if you crash on video library, it is recommended to use files mode or use ToDDS
And finally (and obviously), use a memory-friendly skin like PMIII.HD, Project Mayhem 3, JX 720, or SLiK

I remember that thread! I was the one who started it... ;)

Good list of tips there, covers most of the points I did on the original post(s). You can leave auto temp control on though, just set it high so it never kicks the fan into higher speeds (2% minimum, 68 degrres C as max temp).

I Personally see no difference between 720 and 1080, and on my smaller tv, no difference between 480 and 720, so i just stick with 720, but i might try this for the hell of it

Just how small is your "smaller tv" - is it 7"

Yes you should see a massive difference between 480 and 720 but the difference between 720p and 1080i is barely noticeable to me on my 23" tv (a little more noticeable on the 37" tv but not a massive difference).

27" and i really dont see any difference. and on the 42" i see no difference betweeen 720 and 1080. Swear to god. On the Larger TV there is a MASSIVE difference between 480 and 720, thats true.

heyskull: Theres an option in the video settings to set a video resolution, its about 3 or 4 lines down. It probably says "Best available" so change that to 1080i 16:9 if you haven't already.

Thank you!

I try it with "Transparency (x4x)" skin, but it crashed, because there are too many memory errors and fatal errors.

Now it works very fine with the "Clearity" skin, too - and my FTP is enabled, but not with films or games.
For movies and games must be 1080i disabled!!!

Thanks for the tips. As a CRT RPTV user, anything that can help the Xbox's 1080i performance is highly desirable. I'll try these as soon as I get the Xbox fixed up.
