Help cloning hardrive with Chimp

Greetings, newbie here...so don't be too hard on me.
I used a softmod to put unleash x on my old original xbox. I am trying to upgrade the hard drive now and tried using chimp2618 from this site and Rocky5/chimp 261812, and have been following online tutorials. I checked my hard-drive, Western digital 160gb(1600JB) in the compatibility list as well.
My problem is when I run Fatx it starts to boot...then fails when checking/loading initrd. I never even get to an options menu in Fatx where I can check to see if its reading both my factory hard drive and new 160 gb hardrive. Sometimes it freezes with a green Starting logo on the bottom. I have pulled the IDE cable out of the dvd drive and plugged it into the new harddrive when the tutorials tell me. Tried it so many different ways my finger literally started to bleed. lol.
I loaded Chimp into the Apps folder in my E drive, and put the boot config file in the root E drive. The new harddrive is used and purchased from amazon and was wiped clean..whatever that means....do I need to format the new harddrive with a pc somehow, or am I installing/running Chimp wrong? Anyone able to help or offer any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
