You are not new to the forum, so I shouldn't need to tell you this but:
  • Please open new threads for issues (I have split this off now).
  • Please post debug logs on xbmclogs.com or via pastebin.com not on the forum directly.
your problem looks like a broken language/English/strings.po file btw. Did you do a fresh install ? Worth checking this file - maybe it didn't ftp correctly.

@Smiff
Apart from what Buzz said, your Q:\language\English\strings.po contents should look like this:
https://svn.exotica.org.uk:8443/xbmc4xb ... e/English/

Check your FTP client log for errors.

it's missing from the download. i posted in that thread because it's missing from the .zip. hardly worth a bug report when it looks like a build error. anyone doing a fresh install will see it crashes on startup.

I'll check the build script, but that thread is best left for release updates. I tested earlier mind, and the .po should get included. Maybe I missed something. Appreciate the report of course

the error references the .po, but it seems to be the .xml that the binary needs. after copying .xml from older build it works fine.

It falls back to the xml. The .po is used first, which is the main issue

I recommend re-checking - the only 3rd party build I know of, has the file intact as far as I could see.

You may think the problem is a missing strings.xml, but you would also be wrong. I have moved xbmc4xbox to gettext format duplicating upstream functionality, and allowing our translations to be handled by transifex.

The error was not that the strings.po didn't exist, but that it was malformed. I downloaded a zip from the forum, and all looked fine. I will install myself to check of course, as I can't rule out some strange missing data after decompression, but the new xbmc4xbox no longer uses .xml language files. Cheers

Re: r32695 strings.xml/.po problem

Post by BuZz »

The problem is due to the zipped strings.po having CRLF and mine having LF line endings. there is a patch that makes the parser not care, which isn't in yet, however, this must be due to the build environment/svn options of the builder (or some conversion that tortoise svn is doing), that is auto converting txt files to CRLF. I recommend a PM though, as the project does not officially support 3rd party builds etc.

Thanks for the heads up though.

best would be to wait for the patch that though sorts this no matter line ending etc :)

well yes and no. I still need to fix this, due to the windows build environment etc of many people and tortoise svn defaults etc.

I still prefer bugs on the bugtracker, with debug logs, and detailed methods to reproduce.. in your case

a) downloaded this file
b) unpacked
c) booted and got this error - link to debug log.

this is much more useful than a comment on a build log to someone else. I know you don't like this, but I can search the forum for 2 other times I moaned at you about logs etc, so ;) you should be a pro now ! :) keep an eye on svn. fix coming.

when i say fix coming, not now actually, unless you get lucky. Bed calls! you can convert the file from CRLF to LF (pretty easy) and you can try it then.

Looks to me as though we got lucky - with Mr Baked serving up the build containing the XBMC mainline merges already. :-)
