I'd really appreciate that!
Only used ps3ms before as a server, was ok but I'll give MT a go.
Thankyou!

i reciently got a set of hd wires with my x3 xbox. what do you guys think is it worth it? is there a certain hd video file i can download or do i have to convert all my downloads? if i do is this not very time consuming making it not really worth it? the dvdrips i have are all between 700mb and 1.37gb would the size also increase alot?

ive also got a 750gb hdd installed so size shouldnt be an issue for now. also is there any drawbacks to using the hd setup? for example do original games and emulators work on these settings as well as video plugins etc?

cheers for the help

running in 720p makes a massive difference whether you are playing back 720p content or not. All games should work, running in 480p etc. A very small number of games support 720p afaik.

digital audio also makes a big difference.

downloaded ffmpeg but couldnt get it to work, never used the program before and had no knowledge of it so had to use google to install the program.

once i got it installed it seemed top be working well, so i downloaded a mkv to test (falling skies s03e03) and no joy. the program just cant seem to find the file no matter where i move it to or what i rename it to. my results are below:

you didn't include the file extension. You can tell windows to properly display a file extension rather than hiding them etc. but from cmd you can check the full name of the file by doing "dir" and seeing the files in the current folder. you can use "dir" to check the file you want is actually in the current folder too.

sori mate that was the wrong example . in that one i tried to get the program to scan the folder the file was contained in without any luck. also tired as you suggested with the actual file .mkv without joy again

if it can't find the file, I can only assume that file is not in the current folder.

Check the output of the "dir" command.

Where did you copy the file ? If the file for example is in "My Documents" you can do

Code: Select all

cd "My Documents"
from the folder you are currently in to move to the "My Documents" folder.

can you post on pastebin, the complete output from the cmd windows from you moving to the my documents folder to doing dir, and then running ffmpeg. And you should be able to use tab completion also, so type ffmpeg -i F<tab> to fill out the filename (avoids mistakes, and makes sure it is correct).

you got the ffmpeg commandline wrong. you did "- filename" rather than "-i filename". please repeat with pastebin log with correct ffmpeg parameters. thanks.

i would post the code but........ SUCCESS!!!

i notice that this is converting into another mkv is this down to the code in the command line ie can i change the output to avi and stream this via smb to xbox?

if not i assume mediatomb may be needed?

the mkv is just a container - not a codec, and is well supported by xbmc4xbox - don't need to use avi. this file should play fine on xbmc4xbox. if you use analogue audio, you might need to fiddle with the bitrates and optionally trancode the audio (I use passthrough so like to keep the original multichannel audio etc).

mediatomb allows you to do this automatically, so I can realtime click/playback any 1080p h264 video on the xbox, with it being transcoded via ffmpeg

actually just realized mkv would play on the xbox. thanks for all the help man.

i plan to use these rips on both sd tv set up and another xbox with a lcd tv via 720p cables. Obviously these will work np on the hd setup. as for the sd setup is there a program to use i can easily change the audio bit-rate for sd playback?

maybe im wrong but should i just use dvdrips with the sd setup [ and keep these rips for the hd set up? ] the sd tv probs wont show much difference anyways

well, the transcoded file here will play fine no matter the output res of the xbox, but wont look as good on SD of course. the audio can be transcoded if needed, but xbmc4xbox can decode the 5.1 DTS etc without a problem - although it may use a bit more cpu than stereo mp3.

If you want to play back the files on multiple xbmc4xbox setups, I wouldn't bother making different conversions.

happy days that's great news, cant wait to see this on my lcd with 720p cables unfortunately i cant always get to the lcd and have to use another set up in my garage with just a standard tv. it was just you saying about having to adjust the bitrates if playing sd thats all. you think there will be much need to change it? at least i dnt have to encode it twice

anyways im hopefully soon gona pick up another set of wires for the sd set up which inc an optical out (due to the optical out i have with the 720p set up to the amp sounds great  ) this will replace the red and white wires i have to my amp in the garage and hopefully that will improve thing alot. 8-)

you dont have to adjust the bitrates. you should have a file that plays on xbmc4xbox no matter the output. playing it on SD output just means it won't look as good.

I'm pleased it's working well for you :) should work for any input format within reason depending on ffmpeg's support for it. give it a try and see.
