Cheers Nextelhalo ;)

All patched....

Just got me thinking thou.... I've got an upgraded CPU... but due to the way the games are coded I've patched them all to work with the CPU... so was I better off just sticking with a 733mhz CPU in the first place.... :?

I remember many years ago DreamX offering upgraded 733Mhz CPU's (full pentiums from memory) - with higher internal cache so I guess there must be some benifits?

I patched the memory for 128mb as well... so I guess thats not doing much ether?

I'm sure I read somewhere some games such as Halo got better FPS on upgraded machines...

IND-BiOS is really getting on my wick as well... gesssss that is one sloooooooow booting BiOS!

Aha! yes they did!

Found it..

@Geeba: The benefit of a real Pentium 3 cpu is the bigger cache. The Original Xbox cpu has 128kb cache as it is a celeron class cpu.
I can replace the CPU against another CPU as an example the 1ghz cpu that is a pentium class 256kb cache cpu.
The slightly better cpu doesn't really perform any better than the celeron but it's nice to have.

In theorie i can also underclock the cpu with a slower cpu than the original one but what would the use of something like that be?

I did comparative testing and benchmarking with mplayer under xbmc with a standard box and a 1.4 gig trusty and it was just shy of double the speed, there is merit to say that the extra cache / processor is not used to its potential but it does use the extra in non retail games and apps.

Cheers guys - yep appreciate that the slightly more powerfull CPU does assist with homebrew etc.... and dont get me wrong I love my 1Ghz box, smoother and more responsive for sure! :D

But when I patch the .xbe on software is that completely eliminating the xbox from using the larger cache and more memory? is that patch for all intent making the 1Gh/128 box resemblem a 733/64 item? or is it adjusting the software to use the extra resources?

@professor_jonny: i didn't mean the 1,4ghz celeron upgrade!
I mean the retail cpu 733mhz/128kb compared to a 733mhz/256kb cpu. The extra cache there won't be a big difference.
The 1ghz/256kb cpu does make a difference and the 1,4ghz/512kb does defintely make a difference.

@Geeba: When you patch an XBE it just tells the XBE that the CPU is a 1ghz and the code can be executed correctly. The Cache size isn't altered at all and is used by the lower hardware directly.
It's part of the hardware routine. When the Cache is full the longest unused instuction is removed from the cache. When the cache has double the size it can simply store more instructions and doesn't have to write them back to slower memory regions.
