Question about a Diode for internalizing a controller receiver

Simple question really. Why is a diode needed for this for what your essentially doing is removing the connector and just direct wiring it?
I plan on internalizing the receiver for the logitech wireless controller in to my Original v1.4 Xbox. I was just planning on splicing the wires in the middle of the controller ports and the motherboard connector and just match color for color.
