I just finished cleaning out an Xbox original and seen this weird thing! If also came with a black wire unattached hanging around. Can anyone shine some light on this to what it could be?

The black wire I'm guessing is for the d0 point. So connect it there to enable the LPC port for booting.

the gray wire coming off the chip is for d0
Your missing the switch board for that modchip, its useless without it.
The black cut wires is what connects the modchip to the switch board, the modchip will not function without the external board connected.

Couldn't someone just permanently connect some of the wires together and essentially just make it a basic 512K chip without that board? I imagine you'd need to have detailed knowledge of the pinouts.

just because no one responded right away doesn't mean you weren't going to get a response..

To answer your question, unless you find a forum member that has extra parts you won't be able to just order the missing board from somewhere.
Most all sources for parts or even the complete chip have started drying up. If the board is able to be Tsop'd I would look into doing that instead of a softmod.
