Using HDAT2 to unlock an Xbox hard disc

Post by nidge »

I've done a YouTube video showing how to unlock an Xbox hard disk with HDAT2 link here for the program http://www.hdat2.com/

This is a WIP, there may be some errors :( I will try to update the videos and instructions over time ;)

6th April edited YouTube video
9th May 2017 v60b4, new YouTube Video and updated instructions

Set up your PC with the Xbox hard disk as Master and the DVD drive as Slave.
Set the BIOS to boot from DVD/CD first.
When the program loads, be patient it takes a little while ;)
Type "HDAT2" at the command prompt.
Select the hard disk by using the cursor keys and pressing enter.
Scroll down to "Security" press enter.
Scroll down to "Unlock device" press enter.
Then press "I" to change from User to Master.
Pressing "K" will scroll through a list of built in passwords, if you're lucky it'll be one in the list.
Xboxes are usually "XBOXSCENE" or "TEAMASSEMBLY" which are near the end of the built in password list.
Press "S" to set and then "Y" to confirm.
NOTE: You will only get 5 attempts, and then you will have to re-boot, and start again :(
You can also enter a password manually by pressing "P"
Passwords can be entered in User mode, but you don't get the "K" option for the built in password list.

If you have "zeroed" your hard drive password then 30 HEX is DECIMAL 0.
Hopefully the video will show what I mean :)

HDAT2 also has other useful hard drive tools to repair bad sectors, erase etc...
Have a look at some of the other YouTube videos by other users ;)

Just some useless info ;)
The Xbox used in the HDAT2 YouTube video, is chipped with an Xecuter v1.
It has a standard 10gb Seagate hard disk.
The LED's don't work? I've tried a different on/off control board, but still no LED's?
I have tried another PSU. no LED's.
I have looked over the tracks on the board with a maginfying glass, but I can't see any cracks?
This Xbox works just fine apart from the LED's?

Anyone have any other ideas :)

hey thatnks for the post! I was wondering I am having a hard time unlocking a seagate ST3500630a would you be able to help? I am trying to upgrade a Original Xbox HD with this one. I Have eeprom from original Xbox but can't get Xbox to unlock the Seagate drive for me so I'm unable to build a fresh drive with XBOXHDM 1.9.

Thanks in advance!

How was the 500GB HDD locked ie. was it used in another Xbox or is it 'virgin' and locked by something else?

Do you mean you have the eeprom that locked that HDD?

You say "I am trying to upgrade a(n) Original Xbox HD with this one" does that mean that original Xbox is still in retail state or is is it softmodded/chipped?

This information, at the very least, is needed to be able to provide the best advice.

Dead LEDS more likely. I had the same happen on my crystal 1.4 although on that one I replaced it altogether with one from a 1.0. Try replacing the LEDS with 3mm coloured LEDS of your choice and see if it works. Watch out as the traces holding the LED pads are pretty weak. I had to solder at least one wire from one of the LEDS and secure the wire with electrical tape, but in the end it worked, and now my 1.0 has a nice blue ring. 8-)

If that doesn't work, then I don't know, maybe one of the caps responsible for the power board (there's a big MOSFET controlling it) might've gone bad. I had this happen on the softmodded 1.0 in my sig. That happened because of a leaking clock cap that seems to have caused a few caps to bulge near that MOSFET.
Xbox v1.0 - stock drive,softmodded
Xbox v1.0 - ST380211A,EvoX M8+
Xbox v1.4 crystal - ST316025ACE,iND-BIOS 5004
