The Saga continues , I was in the middle of building the new drive and it all crashed out on me again !!
Could it be overheating ? When I took the machine to bits the heatsink on the little chip seemed hot , it has a little fan on top of it but I am not sure if this is working !!
If I leave it for a while it seems to boot again now , any ideas what the temperatures should be for the two chips ?
When I do the RAM checker it says good ram 50000, bad ram 70000 ( rounded up / down ) but I don't know what that means , could that be the issue also .

Well I just learnt something. I was always under the impression Slayers was EvoXDash based and HeXEn was UnleashX based.

Both of them use EvoX for creating the eeprom backup. Splitting hairs :)

Does 55 degrees sound high ? That is what it said for CPU just before it crashed last .

You shouldn't really experience any instability until at least 70C

Thanks for the reply , I'm still unsure what is happening as when it crashes it will still boot in to stock flubber ( but errors because I'm using a different hdd ) and it still seems to boot to the chip with a long press of the power button as I get the orange light on but I get no video output on screen :-(
I have tried swapping drives and the ribbon cable but still the same results ...
Maybe it's time to forget about the chip and soft mod this machine .

1st things 1st, why not piss off that stupid boot procedure and have the chip auto boot everytime by doing this and taking out the wires leading from BT and LT on the modchip.

It is an Aladdin and you're never going to go on line so at least doing this you know the modchip will boot every time no matter what button you hit.

Did you do the install of the chip? Has the original hdd been softmodded?

Thanks for the info about cutting the wire between BT and LT .
No I didn't do the chip install , and no it's not soft modded .
It now seems like the chip takes a while to clear itself if I leave it 10 mins then boot again it seems ok .

The only thing about cutting the link as suggested means that if the chip is on its way out then I would be better soft modding would I not ? But then how to do the hard drive upgrade ?
The drive is almost built with all my emulators and the latest xbmc on so could I maybe copy the eeprom from the stock hdd , boot in to the chip dash , ftp the stock eprom back and lock the hdd , would this work ?

I'm guessing it's a 1.6 or you could just do a tsop. Have you checked all the solder points to make sure they are good? Otherwise if you don't want to spend anymore on it, I guess it's a softmod.

If you want to install a Softmod you can do the following.

Lock the HDD to your current Xbox via Configmagic.
Use my disc & use the Upgrade Old Softmods option in the advanced features menu.

The latter will install a clean Softmod + all the exploitable game saves.
(it will not effect anything on the E, F, G partitions)
Download Xbox Softmodding Tool & Extras Disc
XBMC4Kids Mod

Thanks guys I will look in to my options
I think it's a 1.1 first gen but I know nothing about TSOP maybe now it's time to learn :-)

Rocky5 thanks for that , so at the minute I have a 160 gig hdd that boots up sometimes to the chip but won't boot to the stock as its not locked and has the wrong eeprom also I have the stock hdd safely stored , would the method you describe work for this set up ?

After more tinkering tonight I am now sure I just want to soft mod and forget about the chip so
@Rocky5 what would I need to do to get to a point where I am softmodded with this almost perfectly set up 160gig hdd ? Is config magic on your disc ? Do I just do as you said above ?
Cheers

Configmagic is not on the disc, because if not used correctly it can render your xbox a dud. Don't worry you will be ok.

Download Configmagic v1.6
Transfer to your Xbox & run it.
When it loads to the menu;
Pick create backup files.
(this will put a backup in E, transfer it to your computer)
Select lock hdd.
(the above will lock the hdd that's in the system to that systems eeprom hdd key)

Download my disc & then use the upgrade old softmods option.

Disable the chip, or remove it & your done.

Now you can use Chimp to clone the hdd to another. You can also just plonk in the 160GB load my disc, it will ask you to format it (triggers + start) after that you can use the disc to FTP over Configmagic & do the above.
Download Xbox Softmodding Tool & Extras Disc
XBMC4Kids Mod

Rocky's advice is great, but just for info, you can do all this using HeXEn without any downloading (it has Config Magic included should you need it, but HeXEn deploys EvoX to backup your EEPROM data and lock your hard drive).
Using HeXEn the process is as simple as:
- select the option to lock the hard drive (under modchip/TSOP hard drive options)
- select one-click softmod install (and follow the steps)
- remove your modchip.

Great , I have never used Config magic before so I will get that tonight ( if my provider lets me ) and do as you say .
I think I can leave the chip in because it only comes on if you long press the power button , a normal press and you get the stock dash :-)

Check in the apps folder on your other box, you may already have config magic. :)

Righto I used HeXen (as I already had it ) and successfully softmodded this xbox and all seemed well until i tried to get XBMC as my startup dashboard !
I have xbmc in E: and in F and have tried Hexen and Slayers ( not rock5 s as I didn't have have a blank cd to burn it ) to change the startup dash , but all I get is the xbox flubber then a blank screen .
Any ideas please , I feel I am almost there but maybe making a silly mistake
Thanks
