Install a custom FAN

Post by Munch »

hi there, im looking forward to softmod my v1.6 xbox soon and in the meantime id like to install a new custom "silent" fan inside de xbox.

Is it true I can totally controll the FAN speed in the XBMC Menu ? Or should I install a FAN Voltage control?

What RPM or Speed% do you recommend for the fan? I guess there isn't a setting that adapts automatically to the cpu temp?

thanks

Yep can control via temperature - xbmc keeps my xbox at around 45degC. If you launch a game though I think it reverts to BIOS settings

If you're thinking of cooling consider changing the thermal paste as well

Dunno if stock size is 80mm but bigger is better - lower rpm (quieter) for same airflow and with a bit of trimming it fits in nicely

i saw this mod before but I dev. not want to do this. higher rpm shouldn't mean more noise if you use a different 70mm fan?!

Fan mods used 80mm becuase it's was near impossible to get a 70mm fan back in the day.

A 70mm fan will produce more noise than what a 80mm will becuase it has to turn faster to move the same amount of air.

Now I use a noctua 80mm trimmed for my Xbox & you can run it at 30/40% & it keeps the Xbox nice & cool, oh & it's also quiet.
(The Xbox runs at 20% stock, but will increase if the heat builds)

With a softmod you can set the fan speed via its settings, this will be a global setting, so the fan will run at what ever % you set in games or at dashboards.
