V1.0 GPU fan
I have a V1.0 console with a noisy gpu fan, just about to dig thru my spares but wondering if any one has just removed the fan and relied on the console fan for cooling ?

Re: V1.0 GPU fan
I did that temporarily. Without a fan, GPU was only 2-3 degrees hotter. However, I replaced heatsink with bigger one, just for feel good
Applying new thermal compound will be a good idea.

Re: V1.0 GPU fan
I found another V1.0 console so swapped the fan over to the other console which i had just sold, got good money for it so wanted it silent .

Re: V1.0 GPU fan
In theory, your GPU and ambient temperatures will affect the lifetime of the electronic components. However, you can just set your BIOS or XBMC fan speed setting up, say, to 40%. Ambient temperature will drop but it probably won't effect GPU as much.
I'm pretty sure you be alright just removing it if 2-3C (~10F) is the only difference. Try something GPU intensive (don't think XBMC4Xbox uses it) to be sure.
All that being said. Best approach would be getting the heatsink from a different version console and replacing the thermal paste.

Re: V1.0 GPU fan
It was still working just a little noisy on start up, i have plenty of spares so might just swap in a later heatsink.
