How to use an Xbox with a VGA monitor

Post by DavPow »

I recently bought a Component to VGA adapter to use on my Samsung SyncMaster 950p (which supports Sync-On-Green). I plugged it and it worked. Sorta.

I found out you actually need to modify the BIOS to work through VGA. Here's what you will need to use your Xbox on a VGA monitor:

-A Component to VGA adapter (I used this one: http://tinyurl.com/kaf6hl9)
-A Sync-On-Green compatible monitor (CHECK IN YOUR OSD SETTINGS BEFORE BUYING/SETTING UP ANYTHING. NOT ALL MONITORS SUPPORT THIS)
-XBTool (https://mega.nz/#F!4CoVibjD!Yh1DixpWufLLlHpbpr33LQ)
-FrostyTheSnowman's VGA BIOS Patcher (https://mega.nz/#F!sOBSzaYJ!b2NRnWX1vZE1FdGmtfDCyg)
-Your favorite BIOS (I am using iND-BIOS 5003)

I AM NOT RESPONSABLE IF YOU SCREW UP YOUR XBOX WITH THIS TUTORIAL. BE CAREFUL WITH FLASHING MODIFIED BIOS'. HAVE A SPARE MODCHIP IN CASE. ALSO THIS ONLY WORKS ON 1.0-1.4 CONSOLES WITH A CONEXANT/FOCUS VIDEO ENCODER. DO NOT USE THIS ON A 1.6.

First of all, get a copy of your favorite BIOS.

Image

Open up XBTool.

Image

Click on "Unpack..." and select your BIOS File.

Image

XBTool will create a folder with the unpacked BIOS files in it.

Image

You should have these files in the folder:

Image

Copy xboxkrnl.img to VGA Patcher's folder.

Image

Run VGA Patcher.

Image

Then, press "Patch"

Image

You should now have new files in the VGA Patcher folder.

Image

Copy the new xboxkrnl.img in the extracted BIOS' folder.

Image

Open XBTool again, but this time select "Pack..."

Then, select the extracted xboxkernl.img in the unpacked BIOS' folder.

Image

Now, give the BIOS a new name and save it.

Image

You should now have your new VGA patched BIOS :)

Image

Now, flash the BIOS using your favorite method (I used EvoX since it is the fastest way of doing it)

Image

When your Xbox reboots, the colors should be very weird on a regular TV. This is normal.

Image

Now go ahead and plug your Xbox on your monitor with the adapter.

Enjoy ;)

Yes that will work, as long as your monitor supports sync on green and you flash your xbox with a VGA BIOS.

Hi,

very interesting tutorial indeed.
I have the same problem with the video out. Very greenish tint and light red and blue colors with Component to VGA cable.

Is there any chance to this BIOS flash with a softmod? I am a little helpless here, how to flash my bios with a softmodded Xbox.
My XBOX is V1.1... so should be compatible.

Any help would be appreciated.

Best regards

EDIT: nm I got it fixed now. I used the Frosty VGA Boot CD and now the colors are perfect.
