My latest experiment

Post by asbo »

So its been a while since I posted anything in the modding section. Not really that related to the xbox but probably interesting for some of you.

Here's a laptop LCD connected to my desktop via DVI:

Pretty good right?
I have a bunch of dead laptops lying around at all times, most of them with working LCD's. So I thought it was time to do something interesting/useful with them.
So I hopped on ebay and bought a LCD driver/controller board. Got it from here 5451(Audio) LCD Controller logic Board LVDS DVI VGA DIY
According to the datasheet its meant to support Sync on green (i.e. xbox vga) but I haven't got that to work yet.

Basically take apart the laptop, have a look at the LCD model number, send them a message. They're very helpful and speak good English.

Got some other fun projects lined up for you all to look forward to. :D

I see where you're going with that, some kind of joytech style flip top lid but with a decent sized screen - that would be very cool... sign me up for one :D

haha maybe, I haven't really decided what I'm going to do with it yet.

This is the reply I got when I asked them about Sync on green(SOG):
The controller is mainly used for lighting up the LCD and common using. For some function, they need to change chip to realize.
 maybe their English isn't as good as I thought. Anyway I guess that means it doesn't support it.
I have another slightly different controller coming soon for another LCD which I think would be more suitable for a xbmc laptop type thingy. Maybe that'll support SOG.

Something like this is the way I'd do that mod..Component in and VGA out=http://www.monoprice.com/products/produ ... 1&format=2
This mod looks right up your alley Asbo.

Yeah I've got one of them on the screen downstairs. I also have one that's just a bare circuit board with component plus some other inputs, that I used to use before I figured out the sync on green thing on this monitor. They are pretty handy. :)

The LCD pictured is 1080p so I feel it would be a "waste" to use it with the xbox, the other LCD I have the controller coming for is 720p which would be a better fit I reckon.

So this is what I've cobbled together, put the laptop hinges on in reverse so you can adjust the screen angle.

The driver for the other LCD came, doesn't support SOG either. I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with it
