Korean Xbox my dad got me as a kid

Post by Darth_Pheonix »

So my dad was in the military when the original Xbox came out and he came home from being stationed in Korea with an Xbox that was modded. I just came across it while visiting my parents house recently and would like to update the dashboard on it, but every time I load up Rocky5's extras disk and use the update old softmod feature (as I'm unsure if it is softmodded or has a modchip installed) it locks up at the extracting portion of the update. Should I open it up to see if it is modchipped, and if so would that affect updating the dashboard that's on it? I don't want to uninstall and reinstall it as I have installed quite a few games on it that I do not want to lose to a factory reset.

You have to be sure whether it is a softmod or a chipped machine. It could even be a TSOP.

I do not know enough about Rocky5's Softmodding Tools/Extras etc to know if that behaviour is proof that it is not a softmod. But as far as I know the only way of determining whether is has been chipped is to open it up and check. If the Xbox has been opened before then that should be fairly obvious as two of the screws are hidden under labels. It is not proof of chipping, it could have been done to change the HDD or something else like that. But if it is all genuinely factory condition then it must be a softmod.

However if all you want to do is change the dashboard (from what?/to XBMC?) then whether chipped or not shouldn't matter. You just have to identify where you main dashboard XBE is located. If it is on C:\ then there is a good chance it is chipped or TSOPed, if it is on E:\ then a softmod is more likely.

Whatever you do not just try replacing it particularly if it is a softmod. Find a good guide or get further advice here.

I'm just trying to update the UnleashX dashboard that's currently on the Xbox, because unfortunately it's one from way back in the day and although it works fine and isn't broken, it doesn't have the most up to date apps/services/etc. Currently I'm FTPing the games I have saved on the hard drive just in case I screw up somewhere and can retrieve the games I had back then. After that I'll crack it open and see if there is a modchip or if it's been tsop'd.

What sort of apps and services are you talking about because the updating of the UnleashX (UX) dash, except in its very early days, has never really done much except correct relatively minor glitches. The final version: v584 is actually more flawed than some of the previous ones which is why I use v572. I seem to remember Rocky5's Softmod itself uses a UX v570 although it might install v584 as the main dash.

So unless your UX version is truly old there's not much reason to do it - the difference even in the design/GUI hasn't changed much since v543. What version do you have installed (found in the System > Settings menus)?

*Added	"Compress Texture" in video settings. Default is Off/No/False.
Settings this to true enables the Dash to use Texture compression
for big images, decreasing the memory requirement to display those
in exchange for a lesser quality image. You can set this to "Yes" if
you are using a skin with lots of videos/images
*Added	"Browse Folder" in Music manager. You can now select folders
containing MP3 and WMA files and the dash will queue them
*Added	WMA playback support for ISO9660 disc/USB FAT32 devices.
Note: Files are copied to a temp folder. File streaming in XACT

speed is still slow. I patched the XDK library to go around the 4GB
limit hardcoded into the system but my mobile HD still wouldn't work.
It could be that it's not USB1.1 compliant but I ran out of hardware
to test. Tested with 128MB, 512MB, 1GB flash disk and 4GB iPod Nano. Let
me know if you have success with bigger HDD.

Note: This is a Quick fix release -some reported bugs may still exists.
Make sure your xbe, zipped skin file, custom music...etc., doesn't contain multiple
periods (".") in its file name. It seems the search file API has a problem when
using search filter such as "*.mp3" or "*.zip". It won't return files like
"my.cool.song.mp3". I'll take a look on this and it's probably something wrong on my
part, but I don't wanna take out the filter and check for the extension myself.
I'm using the standard FindFirstFile/FindNextFile API, if anyone has a tip, that
would be cool.

Version:	0.1.1126A
Release Date:	11/27/2003
First public release

Finding a specific version is now much harder than it was. You could harvest the main UX XBE from Rocky5' softmod or if you can find a copy of Auto Installer Deluxe (AID) or Softmod Installer Deluxe (SID) that usually includes several different versions of the UX XBE. Its menu.xbe in some version is v572 and where I found my original copy.

If you do that you can and should be absolutely sure they are UX dash XBEs and test them first from a temporary file created in the file explorer. Any UX dash XBE will launch a dash effectively as a app because it generates its own default Config.xml and Item.xml in the same folder. Once you have a UX XBE that you know works and you know 100% for sure where your main UX dash XBE is and what it must be called then a simple replacement is all that is necessary.

But doing that is potentially dangerous if it is a softmod, one mistake in the renaming and you could end up with an unbootable Xbox. More importantly it may not actually be what you want to do. If you had used Rocky5's Softmod it would have updated the whole softmod not just your dashboard. Is that really what you wanted to do?

It is recommended practice because it leaves a sotmodded Xbox far better protected from accidents and fiddling. But you could use other installer tools like AID or HeXEn to do the same sort of thing........if you choose the right options. They can also install new main dashes on chipped machines etc too; AID v4.53 (the final official version of AID) for instance has a One-Click chipped Xbox option which will install a UX v584 main dash.

Re: Korean Xbox my dad got me as a kid

Post by Darth_Pheonix »

Thank you for all the pointers. I did manage to figure it out mostly, I upgraded the HDD with HeXen's 2018 disk, and found out it has a modchip of the Aladdin Advance 64 (from pictures I have found on the web, and the pictures I took are too large to post on the forums here) (GBATemp post). But now I'm struggling with getting the xbox to boot to the correct dashboard as it's just booting to the regular xbox dash. Additional pointers would be lovely.

HeXEn = good choice. However I've not used HeXEn to install a dash on a chipped machine so I do not have any direct experience on doing that. It should just have a menu option somewhere to install a dash. It should not be difficult and if something goes wrong, being a chipped machine, it will still boot the disc.

EDIT:-

I have just booted my copy of HeXEn and it looks like you need to use 5. Dashboard Tools > 5.1 Switch Dashboards > 5.1.4 TSOP/CHIP > 5.1.4.1 Switch to UnleashX. But, as said, I've not done this myself so I can not guarantee the result.

FYI only: with AID, which I have used on a chipped Xbox all you need to do is boot the disc and use the specific chipped options either to install a dash using the One-Click or from the dashboard install menu options.

It also works easily with a virgin HDD on a chipped console: just cold boot an AID disc and it will walk you through the formatting and main dash install as part of the process.

BTW if at any time you replace the HDD with a bigger one remember to format the extended partitions correctly using either Chimp261812 (Rocky5's updated version) or XBPartitioner v1.3 (must be this version).
