Original XBOX HDD DOA - trying to replace

Hi all,

New to this arena, so please forgive any noobish questions. So, we have a moded XCMB XBOX in which the HDD died what appears to be a painful death. Lots of clicks, clanks and red circles involved.

We have a new HDD in place and have been trying to use an ISO image for Hexen to create a boot disc. This is failing, the discs burn, but keep coming up blank.

I am wondering if there are any step-by-step instructions out there for creating and engineering disk and them using it to install the HD (unlock, whatever the term is...)

Thanks for any assistance!

Since your original drive is toast, you probably need to do the IDE swap method and build the new drive from scratch with Hexen. There are several guides and YouTube videos out there, just search around and you should find what you are looking for. Once you have everything back up and running, I would strongly suggest you look into doing the TSOP mod. It makes replacing failed drives much easier.

Right, so Hexen could work, but every ISO I download shows as corrupt if I try to mount it in order to dupe it to a disk. And I am uncertain if I need a CD or a DVD for that. Though since it's 2GB, I think DVD.

The vids are what I have been using, but they assume you have a working Hexen disk. Is there an official download link for Hexen?

You just burn the .ISO on to a CD .

That link was different than what I have been using but the net result is the same. I am thinking I either have a step in my process that is off, or some other known factor. All, if anyone has the time to look at the steps I am taking, I am outlining them below:

1) Download a compressed ISO image from the link below:
https://firedrop.com/7e1ba9b605044ea7c00107907f13dde7

2) Decompress the 309Mb compressed file to an ISO image that is >2GB and will not fit on a CD, so I use a DVD.

3) Open my WinXDVD Copy software on my Windows 10 computer, and setup a clone job for an ISO image to goto a blank DVD.

4) Run said job (takes about 10-15 minutes). The software will say the disc is verified. The disc shows the expected media consumption on the back of the disk.

5) Eject disk, reinsert and the computer will not recognize the disk.

6) Added information, the starting point ISO image can be mounted as a Z drive, but attempts to open the drive result in a message about corruption.

So, the top questions:

1) Should I be able to read the ISO image on a Windows 10 computer? Any idea why it would say corrupt?

2) Is there a preferred method of creating the Hexen disc that has steps outside of this process?

Any help involving answers to the questions at hand would be appreciated!!

  1. Downloaded Hexen, extract the zip/rar so you have the .iso files on your desktop.
  2. Download ImgBurn and install it
  3. Open ImgBurn and open the .iso file you extract to your desktop.
  4. Pick burn and that's you.

Your PC will not see anything on the disc, only the Xbox will.
( your PC will also not be able to open the .iso by default, you need software, C-Xbox Tool )

Not really, I just set it to AWS and let the program controls the speed.

OK, done and same result still, Xbox not seeing the DVD as bootable. In fact, the disk is readable on anything, a PC ot the XBox. Any ideas?

Make sure you are using DVD -R discs. Not -RW or +R.

Yep, we are using DVD-R. So, the XBOX has been unplugged for more than 5 areas. Some reading is indicating I need to hook up a working drive from another console long enough for the system clock to kickin and then I can boot from the disk. Is that correct?
