[Linux] XDSL 7.0: Duct Taped R1. Support and Requests= Open

Post by Xphazer »

This is just a repost of my XDSL version i had posted on the old forum.

Drag & Drop installation, no disc required.. (not an .iso)
Select resolution at boot (640x480, 800x600, 480p, 720p)
MyDSL browser: repo address fixed.
Configuration file to run these at boot:
Firefox, Thunderbird, Mercury, VNC viewer, RDP viewer, VNC server, FTP server, SSH server, HTTP server
Also include setting to access your computer via RDP or VNC at boot or from a single click.
Few Menu/Esthetics changes.. (install removed from menu :))

To use Mercury Messenger, you need to switch to Fluxbox windows manager.. and the protocol "MSNP11(Stable)" should be used
(If the password is saved.. It can be used with JWM afterward)
Also.. the virtual keyboard is not supported.. So a USB Keyboard is required..

After updating rdesktop to version 1.7.0.. I have been able to get sound and image from an Android-X86 VM. (choppy video ^^)

FTP= dsl/dsl (Use the the FTP server only to transfer file into XDSL.. Do NOT use it to transfer Movies, Xbox Apps or Games)
SSH= root/xbox (use SSH only if you know what you are doing.)

Do not use LinNeighborhood (Samba Share) to transfer stuff on your Xbox (outside the XDSL installation)

To customise your XDSL installation, or simply to understand how stuff work..
Use the VNC server and a VNC client on your PC. You will probably have a better image quality than on your TV.

To set whats running at boot or set the automatic RDP/VCN viewer information:
Start XDSL FTP server, use your favorite FTP client and adjust MyDSL.cfg to your need.

Overscan can only be corrected (the easy way) on 800x600 and 640x480 resolution:
linuxboot.cfg> replace "video=800x600" by "video=xbox:800x600,hoc=X,voc=Y"
X is the horizontal value and Y is the vertical value.. (1-20)
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=377567
You can also remove resolution you are not using from linuxboot.cfg

While in XDSL you should use the Reboot/Shutdown option whenever possible..
Using the power button can end up with a corrupted XDSL..

rdesktop 1.7.0
Mercury Messenger 2.0-RC8
thunderbird 2.0.0.24
firefox 2.0.0.20
Java 1.6.0_29-b11
Java 1.5.0 (MyDSL)
vncserver 1.4.6 (MyDSL)
flash 9.0.48 (MyDSL)
LinNeighborhood 0.6.5 (MyDSL)
GTK2, Alsa, GGC1, apt, gnu-utils (MyDSL)
etherape 0.8.2 (apt)
xscreensaver 3.34 (apt)

How to install:
Simply transfer the CONTAIN of the "E" folder to the root of your E:\ partition.
And transfer the "Linux" folder to your Apps folder.. (you can put it wherever you want..)
To start XDSL run the default.xbe from the "Linux" folder.

Thanks to all the originals creators /collaborators.

To fix if i ever release another revision. (Feel free to suggest, i'll do my best with what's possible.)

Looks interesting :) I thought, that is more difficult to run Linux on Xbox. I will try this, but unfortunately I'm noob at Linux software. Thanks!

I could only get the FTP server (not VNC server) to start on boot via MyDSL.cfg. Also the overscan correction video=xbox:640x480,hoc=20,voc=20 (tried from 5-20) didn't have any effect on a v1.6. Am I supposed to adjust linuxboot.cfg within E:\ or elsewhere?

Code: Select all

# START VNC/FTP/SSH/HTML SERVER ON BOOT
#
VNCSRVBOOT="yes" # Start the VNC Server When XDSL Boot: yes/no
FTPONBOOT="yes" # Start the FTP Server When XDSL Boot: yes/no
SSHONBOOT="no" # Start the SSH Server When XDSL Boot: yes/no
HTTPONBOOT="no" # Start the HTTP Server When XDSL Boot: yes/no

The VNC server at boot should work, i will test it tonight...
And about the v1.6.. They are well know to give trouble running linux.
There is a fix option in the menu, and have a look at the thread i linked from x-scene (6th reply).. there is not much i can do about it :(.

I re-transferred the folders and re-enabled FTP/VNC/HTTP on startup again. Everything is working properly now. There may have been some file corruption due to improper exit (as warned in your OP)

I am willing to test out anything you might work on in the future. I want to stress the fact that I personally will continue running these old boxes from time to time - perhaps set up a few friends yet. So your audience hasn't gone - at least not entirely.

I have 4 currently functional XBOX1s. One of the boxes is TSOP'd running Gentoox (Native) - the others all on XBMC dash. Since I already have the dedicated Gentoox box, I'll toss XDSL back on an extra machine and test stability and performance.

Hey,

Just wondering about LCD support in Xbox Linux. This is still a really solid workhorse, and would like to create a no-display server that communicates to a LCD screen. This is a "general" question, but I have X3/XLCD should anyone care to know that.

Is it possible? I just don't want to have to sit at a terminal using VNC or permanantly hook to a TV just to see simple status/log etc.

Wouldn't it be sweet to have logcat on your LCD?! Fingers crossed...

--- edit:
I thought of a couple additional questions.

Recommendation for how to do a native install with this release? Which partitions are options, as well?
Different launchers for booting on different partitions?
Recommend anything if we wanted to switch bios and boot this running cromwell?

I remember a lot of material being out there on how to do this stuff but there are a lot of different approaches.

My goal is to set up a "Native" installation -- just for a custom sized G partition on the end of my HDD. I should ideally be able to hide that G partition when running the XBOX side (to avoid corruption issues). My understanding is we will be able to mount our FatX partitions just fine if running on linux. Does bios effect this at all?

I'd like to bank switch with a hard drive (like the xtenders); Basically switching to a completely native filesystem and switching away from the fatX formatted drives.

Like I said; I've got the X3 and the bank switches - so now I'm living in style and ready to flash some cromwell again - plenty of bad flashes and my chip will still work.

Gentoox did have some info on it but I was a little fuzzy when I last tried flashing my TSOP from information over there and basically ruined stuff. Rather dated as well; but yet the only standing site I can find support info from. But this was a long time ago.

-- If you could put it in *any* context, i think it will be beneficial for me in finding the answers I need. Hopefully for others as well.

You could try adapting this approach to suit your needs, I already have a native gentoox hdd laying around somewhere that i plan on trying out sometime soon in my trusty:

No new version coming?
How does XDSL work with 1.4 GHz and 128mb ram? any difference in speed?
Outlook mail works superb, no Skype though.

No, nothing new planned for now.
RAM upgrade sure helps, CPU probably does too but I have no upgraded CPU motherboard to test.
