Hello all!! Great to see there is still a community for the original and great Xbox !! Ok guys i hit a snag, my Xbox began acting up, i started messing with the box, i got it booting again into Executer2 but after 32 min like clock work it box shuts down. I tested it with and with out mod chip and indeed 32 min shutdown. I thought it was a heat issue so i put arctic silver on the Cpu and Gpu and also put in a new bigger fan. Before i did that the box would run about 10 min, after that now it will run 32 min and kick off. Ive read it could be a bad cap causing this, Does anyone know where to start? The clock Cap was removed from my box so its not something with that issue. I changed out the Power source and it seemed to run cooler but after 32 min it kicked again ... I ordered a New Xbox board..well new to me .. from Ebay, the same board that i am running now a 1.0.anyone know if i should be able to Solder in pins click the mod chip in and connect my HDD and boot up?? its been a very long time since ive worked on an Xbox and im trying to relearn how to do it all, Ive been running my xbox for 16 years or so never had an issue. always worked good. Im actually still running a ..Drum roll please ...a Gen 1 Matrix chip, its been a champ and still going. I dont know people seem to be surprised im still running that chip, but it gets even better that the chip was damaged and i got it working 16 years ago, a friend of mine tried soldering in the chip himself and destroyed the pin connectors and some of the traces to them, i tracked the traces and attached wires to them out to the pin header then mounted springs to the LPC header and soldered the wires to it, it worked great for 16 years.. since this happened i rewired the chip to a nice harness that connects right to the Pin header. But anyway, the chip isnt the issue, anyone know what might be causing the xbox to Kick off after 32 min? the DVD seems fine the HDD, 40gb WD, seems fine. anyone that help me along the way please shoot me a message. also, if anyone has links to places for like bios and evox and info on how to do it all again, please feel free to link me that way to, Would just like to read and refresh everything in my head. Thank you all !!

WOW, umm ok, i checked everything professor johnny, the auto off is disabled. but i got to thinking im going to just do a few tests and see if i can narrow this down more.. ok it seems to totally be a heat issue, dont know how but yeah, i put a box fan on high right on top of the xbox with the HDD and DVD both out of the box. Right now after even playing some games, the Xbox is CPU 104.2 F MB 82.4 F but with those temps the box has been running now for 56 min. Now anyone have any idea at all what the heck i can do?? I put in a bigger fan in the system. all i can think of doing right now is put a bigger Gpu fan on it, or maybe mod a PC CPU cooler i have for a 8 core, 3.5 ghz cpu to fit on the xbox.. the second idea i have is just make a case mod basically take a sheet of wood and keep the DVD where it is but mount the HDD above the Dvd and 2 120mm fans right on top of the cpu gpu and psu.. the top cover wont mount anymore but right now .. i dont really care lol. Im going to do some testing with the GPU heat sink and fan, if it gos back to shutdowns, i guess ill have to do something major. Anyone have any idea why it maybe running hotter?? its ran great for 16 years! the Gpu seems clean the fan is running, but im going to take it off and mount a larger fan on it. just hit one HR and 2 min and still going. hmmm i have not yet gave up !! Any ideas guys?? can anyone tell me what temps they get with stock cooling after the box is running for an HR or so for comparison please !!?? thanks guys!

welp, i got that new board and put it in, took about an hr to solder new pins and hook it all up, but it fired up on the first try. this board isnt shutting down at all and reaching higher temps than the old one. my only guess is old stressed hardware, just couldent take it like it used to.the old board was kicking off at 132.4 f and 98.8 f, this board runs at about 145.3 f and 120.2 f so big change but very happy my Emu station is back =D.

So what exactly is this sort of issue? Bad caps? Corrosion?

my guess would heat flexing the board and bga loosing connection with the board.

press down on the chips and try boot and see if it fears any better could need a reball or reflow?

i read about reballing but it was about the xbox 360. so far its running great with the new board, so someday i might get the board out and mess with it more.
