Evan I experienced the same problem as you did, what helped for me is changing the XBMC Dir to /Q/. Doing this will create the extra dds sets both, don't worry, even though your XBMC is probably installed under E-Apps-XBMC it changes everything without any problems.

ToDDS is still recommended, because it saves RAM whereas libjpeg makes loading the images faster without saving the amount as RAM as ToDDS does. The bigger your library the more ToDDS can make a difference RAM wise, whereas having a smaller library libjpeg will do the job just fine.

Commonly mp4 videos have x264/h.264 as a codec which XBMC can't play using mplayer, instead you should use dvdplayer.
Also note you can't play anything above 480p when the codec is x264/h.264.

I've used two other external HDD's and again I could stream with no problems, I think these cheap CnMemory are just not suitable for streaming to xbmc4xbox.

I don't think I'm having network or DNS problems, because I can stream from my PC internal HDD and my older external HDD's only the two new ones give me problems.
