I fixed the problem with 720p .mkv playback in 1080i (xbmc4xbox 3.1/SLik)

DVDPlayer default Cache settings were too high.
use:

video cache:1024
video cache max time: 5 sec
audio cache:256
audio cache-max time: 5 sec
