Using PC DvD Drive

Post by border collie21 »

So I'm in the process of putting my xbox into a pc case and was wondering if i could use a standard pc optical drive as the stock xbox drive is a pain to work with.

I think a specific drive is required as well as a 80 pin ide cable as the stock one wont do, not sure as i havent done this myself but im sure someone will be along to confirm :D ( dont forget to show us some photos of your case swap once you get it finished :P )

there are specific dvd drives you can use you just need to write the xbox firmware to it and wire in the harness to make it work properly.

I think all will work except games if you use a pc dvd drive, I believe it reads outside edge in not inside edge out or something like that.

Like above.

All IDE dvd drives will work but they will only read burned media, so original games are a no go.

Now if you can get a hold of 1 of 3 drives, then you can flash it's firmware with a hacked firmware & allow playback of original media.
(You will also need to flip the belt drive motor on one of them, they never fixed the firmware, so open is close & close is open  )

Theisoforums has tutorials on how to do what you want.
(Also Google)

If you are wanting original media playback, I would just extend the Xbox dvd drive power/eject cables & be done with it, unless you're good at soldering then then the PC drive is the way to go, if you can find one that is.

If you don't care for original media playback then just stick any IDE dvd drive in & you're done.
(Eject becomes finicky if you don't hook it up to the Xbox eject, as the Xbox can't tell if the PC drive is open or closed, a restart of the Xbox fixes that issues, but having to restart the Xbox to boot a disc is not ideal)
