I recently dusted off my old xbox in hopes of modding it with XBMC but have hit a will in the softmodding process because I do not have the action replay or a desktop computer to connect the xbox hard drive to.
Is there another alternative that isn't too difficult (I have some tech experience but haven't done any soldering or anything like that)? I was thinking perhaps getting an IDE to USB cable but I was not sure if that would work. I was also trying to do this as cheap as possible so if I could avoid spending too much money on different items that would be a plus.
Any advice?
Softmodding w/out a desktop or action replay

a game save expliot might be the cheapest and easyest method.
basically you copy a game save expliot on the memory stick and run a suitable game to be able to softmod the console.
You can hack up a pc memory card if it is below 4 gig and put it into the xbox you can buy pre made cables to connect them to the xbox also.
from time to time there is soft mod kits on the net that you could just buy the whole lot
it might be the easyiest method for you rather than plugging the hdd into your pc and hot swapping?

What you can do is get a memory stick and make a short adaptor lead using a dead xbox controller lead and a usb extention cable.
you bacically wire them together so you could plug the memory stick into your xbox (with the cable) and the pc normally.
You could then put the expliot on the mem stick with the pc then plug it into your xbox with the lead you just made, pop in your game disk to suit the expliot and you just load the save game from off the mem stick from your game, three or four seconds later you can install your softmod as you can now run a hombrew auto installer dvd such as hexen as it has been exploited.
You could use sticky tape or choc block connectors or if you feel wicked a soldering iron and heat shrink to join the wires alternativly you can buy these leads off ebay for a few dollars.
If you are keen on soldering you could open up the memory stick and solder the xbox lead to the mem stick directly?.
if you have access to someone with a modded xbox they could copy an expliot onto an official xbox mem stick then you could jus plug it into your controller.

Here's the xbox to USB adaptor I made, and also a controller to USB(so you can plug a controller into a PC) adaptor with the same breakout cable.

I gave this one to a family member recently so I bought another breakout cable thingy from nidge
Its pretty easy to make but you do need a soldering iron.

If you don't want to solder, I bought these stuffs on eBay:
- Tom Clancys Splinter Cell (Xbox Classics) Xbox €3,42 EUR
- XBOX Memorycard 8 MB €9,95 EUR
- Original Xbox One Controller Gamepad to PC USB Adapter Cable €8,48 EUR
Otherwise, this "kit" should do the trick :
http://www.befr.ebay.be/itm/Xbox-XBMC-s ... 53f9798a36
But without a good ol'desktop pc, you are limited to the original hard drive.

Using chimps you can install a larger hdd by cloning the original onto a larger hdd.ced64k wrote:If you don't want to solder, I bought these stuffs on eBay:
